In 1932 Samuel Ostrander was the founder and first president of the firm. He managed to get through the Great Depression and countless other troubles with a careful eye on clients' needs. His other eye was fixed squarely on the bottom line.
Since then the realty/insurance firm moved a few times and eventually came under the ownership of Ed Butler, who joined the firm in 1949. His sons, Joseph, Dan and Tom now serve as key officers of the downtown business.
Now President Dan Butler credits his father as being the steadying force during the family's ownership. "Our biggest reason for surviving was our father's 48 years of service, especially in the 1970s recession. By then, the agency was in good financial condition."
Tom Butler, who works in real estate, said " operating an agency such as this, is becoming rare these days. It used to be common, particularly in this area."
